Disrupt Your Database: 5 Questions for the New Year

Is your association still using old software? Thirty-seven percent of the associations that participated in the “2015 Association Data Management Benchmarking Survey” indicated that they had been using their current AMS for more than seven years.

It’s likely that their technology isn’t meeting their current needs or generating the information required to plan for the future. If you’re in a similar position, this is your year to make a new beginning. As I write this, the theme from ASAE’s Technology Conference last month is still fresh in mind: “Status Quo—Denied, Disruption—Required.”

You’ve got to disrupt the status quo at your organization, and one of the best places to start is a critical analysis of your AMS and overall data management capabilities. Last year we hosted a great webinar highlighting 5 Tips for a Successful AMS Selection Process. We also developed a guide to Choosing the Best Association Software for Your Organization.

Along with reviewing these resources, I would encourage you to ask five important questions about your database as you begin planning for this year:

  1. Do you have access to all the information that you need and want about your members?
  2. Is it easy to generate reports and set goals based on this information?
  3. How do staff members feel about your current technology?
  4. What business processes could be streamlined, and is it possible do to accomplish with your current system?
  5. Why are you continuing to use your current system (i.e. price, fear of change, etc.)?

Depending upon the answers, you’ll have a better sense of just how much “disruption” is needed to meet your association’s current and future business needs as well as saving time and money.
